North Korea in a League of Its Own

"North Korea is in a league of its own when it comes to persecution of Christians. Research estimates there are as many as 70,000 Christians in the country’s gulags out of an estimated 200,000 prisoners.  For the eleventh consecutive year, North Korea tops the World Watch List ranking of Open Doors, which tracks the persecution of Christians around the globe. With consistent human rights offenders such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, it’s hard to gain the top spot on the WWL even once — much less for 11 years in a row."

Boko Haram Denies Ceasefire

"Boko Haram has finally clarified the question of a ceasefire: according to them, there isn't one. That explains why the violence hasn't stopped. Christians are concerned, since they are one of the targeted groups. Voice of the Martyrs says attackers often maim their victims, stealing their livelihood. Not anymore, says spokesman Todd Nettleton. They just launched a prosthetics lab. "We just had a team that was there. They fitted 16 patients with a total of 17 prosthetics. Most of these patients have been in wheelchairs for as much as two years since the initial attack." Voice of the Martyrs doesn't stop there. "That's one part of our work, just providing medical care for Christians who are attacked and injured. The other part of our work is on the spiritual side: providing Bibles, providing Christian literature, providing fellowship for pastors and other church leaders, to help them to be encouraged and to withstand these attacks." "

Mission Network News

"Believers are uneasy after a string of attacks on Christian ministers in Tanzania. According to Open Doors USA, gunmen shot and killed a priest on the island of Zanzibar last week. A few weeks prior, an Assemblies of God minister was slashed and killed. The areas remain tense in this predominately-Muslim African country. Tanzania is ranked #24 on the Open Doors World Watch List of the worst persecutors of Christians. Pray for protection and peace for believers."

Christian Pastors Arrested and Beaten in India

"Two Christian pastors in India's southwestern state of Karnataka have been beaten by Hindu radicals, dragged to a Hindu temple, forced to worship Hindu idols, and arrested for worshiping Christianity. Unfortunately, this is an experience shared by many pastors across India. Many pastors in India have been attacked by Hindu radicals. When the authorities get involved, the beaten—and sometimes barely conscious—pastors are arrested and jailed instead of their assailants."

Christian Boys Kidnapped in Pakistan

"Two Christian boys were kidnapped by unidentified men in Karachi, Pakistan, on Jan. 27, the Pakistan Christian Post reports. The reasons for the kidnapping remain unknown, but some suspect that the boys were taken because of their religious minority status. Abductions of Christian children occur often in Pakistan, though victims are predominantly girls who are often abused and, at times, forcibly married to older Muslim men and forced to convert to Islam."

China's Plan to Wipe Out House Churches

"Persecution in China has been clearly and openly on the rise over the past years. ChinaAid, a human rights group, has unveiled a sinister plan by the Chinese regime to completely wipe out the country’s house churches. The first part of the plan was to require house churches join the Three-Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM) church system. The second part includes more pressure on house churches and banning the term “house church.” The third part of the regime’s plan is to completely shut down any house church that does not join the TSPM."

US Pastor Kang Jailed in Russia

Pastor Kang, Jailed since September

Russia
Mission Network News
February 22nd, 2013

"A U.S. pastor in Russian has been jailed, and no one's been talking about it until now. Wade Kusack with Russian Ministries says Pastor Thomas Kang of San Diego, California "has been held for more than five months already in custody on an attempted bribery charge. The bribe was a $30 donation he provided in conjunction with a fine he willfully paid." Authorities questioned Pastor Kang after he unwittingly hired an Uzbek whose work visa had recently expired. Kusak says, "We can observe increased persecution of all minorities, especially of protestant churches in Russia. And unfortunately, this case is just one more example of local police and local authorities that can do anything they want against protestant minorities. They just go unpunished." Kusack is in Washington, D.C. to advocate on Pastor Kang's behalf."

"Pastor Thomas Kang was detained and arrested in Russia the day before he was to open "'House of Joy,' a home he intended to use as a retreat for disadvantaged families, children of soldiers, and Christian groups."  He has been held in Russia since September 2012, and it is believed his arrest was meant to intimidate and delay the opening of the home. “In light of the rising religious persecution in Russia, it seems likely that this is an attempt to intimidate Pastor Kang and prevent 'House of Joy' from being used for religious purposes," stated a news release from Russian Ministries."

Boko Haram Cease Fire?

Nigeria
Mission Network News
February 21st, 2013

"23 days ago, Nigeria's Islamist faction, Boko Haram, offered a truce.

"The government responded with a 30-day "wait and see." Their cautious optimism came in light of the intensified 42-month multi-prong attack strategy. It seemed that under the "Western education is forbidden" motto of Boko Haram, everyone was fair game: military, police, security facilities, schools and churches.

"The goals of the extremist group were two-fold: instill Sharia law throughout the country, and create an Islamic state. A subset goal was the eradication of Christian presence."

    Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial;
    for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him

    James 1:12

    'Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the
    devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so
    that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

    HOW TO READ A PERSECUTION NEWS STORY

    Trials make the promise sweet;
    Trials give new life to prayer;
    Trials bring me to His feet,
    Lay me low, and keep me there.

    "God often takes away our comforts and our privileges in order to make us better Christians. He trains His soldiers not in tents of ease and luxury, but by turning them out and subjecting them to forced marches and hard service. He makes them ford through streams, and swim through rivers, and climb mountains, and walk many long miles with heavy backpacks of sorrow. Well, Christian, may this not account for the troubles through which you are passing? Is the Lord bringing out your graces and making them grow? Is it for this reason He contends with you?"

    Read Why Do I Face Trials?,
    by Alistair Begg, Truth for Life Daily, at One Place

    Christian persecution is just a phenomenon in the
    Middle East.

    Christians aren’t greatly
    impacted by persecution.

    Whatever persecution there is, the damage is superficial - more a loss of multicultural diversity than anything else.

    Christians supposedly bring persecution upon themselves by proselytizing.

    Persecution couldn’t
    happen here.
