A Beautiful Resurrection Study, by Randy Alcorn

Why is the Resurrection So Important,
by Randy Alcorn

of Eternal Perspective Ministries,
at Bible Study Tools

"In the late 1990s, a group of scholars assembled to evaluate whether Jesus actually said the things attributed to him by the Gospel writers. Although they employed remarkably subjective criteria in their evaluation of Scripture, members of the self-appointed “Jesus Seminar” were widely quoted by the media as authorities on the Christian faith.

"Marcus Borg, a Jesus Seminar leader, said this of Christ’s resurrection: “As a child, I took it for granted that Easter meant that Jesus literally rose from the dead. I now see Easter very differently. For me, it is irrelevant whether or not the tomb was empty. Whether Easter involved something remarkable happening to the physical body of Jesus is irrelevant.”1

"As a child, Borg was right. As an adult—though considered a spokesman for Christianity—he couldn’t be more wrong. What Borg calls irrelevant—the physical resurrection of Christ’s body—the apostle Paul considered absolutely essential to the Christian faith. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins... [and] we are to be pitied more than all men” (1 Corinthians 15:17, 19).

"The physical resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of redemption—both for mankind and for the earth. Indeed, without Christ’s resurrection and what it means—an eternal future for fully restored human beings dwelling on a fully restored Earth—there is no Christianity."

Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane

As Easter approaches, I would like to focus on The Suffering Servant, by Alistair Begg.  This is a most powerful study of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, His suffering as one of us, His fear, His humanity.  Oh, that we could have helped Him, given Him ease through this, His passion.  Oh, what He has done for us!

The Suffering of the Servant, Part A, by Alistair Begg at Truth for Life

The Suffering of the Servant, Part B, by Alistair Begg at Truth for Life

Following is paraphrased from Alistair's Part A Broadcast:

"Jesus was deeply distressed and troubled:  "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death."  "Everything is possible for you, Father, take this cup from me.  Yet, not what I will, but what you will..."

"While the gospel writers provide no physical description of our Savior...  We are given something of the chemistry of Christ, a little of the psychological makeup of Jesus, a little description of Jesus as a man...

"Jesus puts the Lord's prayer into practice in the Garden of Gethsemane...

"From the gospels we gain a striking and somewhat incongruous picture.  Gospel readers familiar with Jesus as rabbi, teacher, worker of miracles.  Aware that Jesus was a friend of sinners.  So, we are not ready for this picture of a distressed Christ.  He began to be deeply distressed and troubled...

"It was cold enough for a fire on that evening.  So on an evening such as this, what is happening here, that we find Jesus sweating profusely?  We know it was cold, Peter warmed himself at the fire.  In his experience of deep distress and trouble, his apostles ask, "Jesus, what is wrong."  "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death..."

"Most of us miss this, we don't really want to handle this...

"Moving now steadfastly toward the cross...  "My food is to do the will of Him who sent me, and to finish His work."  "I am setting my face steadfastly towards Jerusalem, I will be handed over to cruel men, who will crucify me, and on the third day I will rise again..."

"Now, he shrinks from the cup.  It's a different picture.  He knows it to be the will of God.  He has repeatedly asserted, affirmed the divine necessity of His suffering.  Now, He is confronted with the immediacy of the ordeal.  Deeply distressed.  Deeply troubled.  Overwhelmed to the point of death...

" "No man ever feared death like this man feared death."  Martin Luther...

"John McLeod (Scottish theologian):  "He went to the outer limits of human endurance, so close to the absolute limit that He was almost overwhelmed..."

"He is about to be destroyed at the Father's hands.  Isaiah 53:  It was the Lord's will to crush Him and to cause Him to suffer...

"Romans 8:  He did not spare His own son, but gave Him up for us all...

"What you have here is:  The Innocent about to suffer at the hands of God.  The Sinless about to bear the wrath of God in Himself for sin.  The prospect of the Perfect One being nailed on a cross on a garbage heap outside of Jerusalem, between two thieves, abused and disabused.  Paul tells us why:  "God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Heaven..."

"John Stewart, theologian:  "I could never believe in God were it not for the cross.  I could never believe in a God who was removed from the pain and overwhelming distress of human suffering...

"There was nothing in Christ's humanity to buffer his senses or anesthetize his suffering.  "They offered Him wine mingled with gall, but He refused to drink it..."

32 They came to a place named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed."
33 And He took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very distressed and troubled.
34 And He said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch."
35 And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, the hour might pass Him by. 36 And He was saying, "Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; yet not what I will, but what You will."
Mark 14:32-36

39 And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him.
40 When He arrived at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not enter into temptation."
41 And He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt  down and began to pray,
42 saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done."
43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.
44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.
45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow,
46 and said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not enter into temptation."
Luke 22:39-46

Listen to Alistair Begg's most powerful insight into Christ's suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane.  Jesus agonized as a man.  We must not forget to give Him our most heartfelt gratitude for His suffering, for what He did for us.  It is Good Friday.  It is Easter.  We give great love to Him, our thanks for what He has done for us, our childlike gratitude.  We have not forgotten!

Baptism?

Jack Kelley addresses baptism in his newsletter of March 16th.  Entitled, Is The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit Required For Salvation?, this devotional is well worth the reading!  Jack addresses the issue with his usual no nonsense approach to biblical doctrine.  If the Word speaks of it, then it is true.  The following quotes and scripture are taken from Is The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit Required For Salvation?, by Jack Kelley at Grace Thru Faith.

"Believing there was a Jesus is what gives you the historical Jesus.  Believing in Jesus is what saves you. It means you believe you’re a sinner in need of a Savior, and that Jesus died to save you and rose again."

1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,
2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
1 Corinthians 15:1-4

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:16

28 Therefore they said to Him, "What shall we do, so that we may work the works of God?"
29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."
John 6:28-29

"For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day."
John 6:40

13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation - having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,
14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory.

Ephesians 1:13-14

21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God,
22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22

"But in his definitive teaching on Spiritual gifts (1 cor. 12-14), Paul never mentioned the need for a second baptism to receive them.  He said the Holy Spirit gives these gifts to each believer as He determines for the good of the body."

Your Bible, A Living Treasure, Part Three

"In the first two parts of this study, we saw the Bible as a timeless, truthful, treasured book, a living book because the Creator of the universe literally breathed out the Word of God. If you missed these studies, check out the article archives. We saw that it must be assimilated - taken into your mind, understood, and provided as nourishment for your soul and spirit. How do you do that? First by praying, asking God to be your teacher, then by meditating."

Meditate Upon It

I will meditate on Your precepts And regard Your ways.
Psalm 119:15

My eyes anticipate the night watches, That I may meditate on Your word.
Psalm 119:148

"Ask these six questions as you study the Word of God, and God will show you what He wants you to learn.
Is there a promise to claim?
Is there a lesson to learn?
Is there a blessing to enjoy?
Is there a command to obey?
Is there a sin to avoid?
Is there a new thought to carry with me?"

Memorize It

Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
Psalm 119:11

I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word. Gimel.
Psalm 119:16

Obey It

4 You have ordained Your precepts, That we should keep them diligently.
5 Oh that my ways may be established To keep Your statutes!
Psalm 119:4-5

Proclaim It

Make me understand the way of Your precepts, So I will meditate on Your wonders.
Psalm 119:27

I will also speak of Your testimonies before kings And shall not be ashamed.
Psalm 119:46

Let my tongue sing of Your word, For all Your commandments are righteousness.
Psalm 119:172

"Let the Word of God be constantly in your mouth. The more of the Word you give away, the more will be woven into the fabric of your soul and spirit."

The Bible is a Treasured Book

The law of Your mouth is better to me Than thousands of gold and silver pieces. Yodh.
Psalm 119:72

How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Psalm 119:103

Therefore  I love Your commandments Above gold, yes, above fine gold.
Psalm 119:127

The Bible Is a Living Book

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12

It is the Spirit who gives life ; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.
John 6:63

The Bible Must Be Assimilated

"For the Bible to become a living, breathing, life-giving reality for you, you must assimilate it. You don't just read a cookbook, you eat the meal. If you don't assimilate it, no matter how much you appreciate it, what good is it? And with the Bible, it means that you are to take it into your mind, to thoroughly comprehend it, to use it as nourishment for your mind and heart. How do you do that?"

Ask God to Be Your Teacher

Blessed are You, O LORD; Teach me Your statutes.
Psalm 119:12

Your Eyes Will Be Opened

Open my eyes, that I may behold Wonderful things from Your law.
Psalm 119:18

Your Understanding Will Be Increased

Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
Luke 24:45

Your Heart Will Be Stirred

Incline my heart to Your testimonies And not to dishonest gain.
Psalm 119:36

Your Mind Will Be Enlightened

Your hands made me and fashioned me; Give me understanding, that I may learn Your commandments.
Psalm 119:73

Dove of the Holy Spirit, by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, 1660

Adrian Rogers is one of my favorite teachers.  Though he is no longer with us, he is still winning souls.  As we approach Easter, I would like to study The Bible as a living treasure, by looking through the eyes of Adrian Rogers.  This man loved the Lord!  We have yet today much to learn from him!

You can read the entire article, Your Bible, A Living Treasure, Part One, by Adrian Rogers at Bible Study Tools.

"Dr. Adrian Rogers, preacher/teacher of Love Worth Finding Ministries, had a zeal and love for Jesus that resonated in every message. His legacy continues to reach around this world, sharing the good news that Jesus Christ is the greatest Love worth finding. Although Dr. Adrian Rogers passed away on November 15, 2005, tributes continue to pour in testifying of his worldwide impact."

Following are quotes and bible verses from Part One:

"In this study of the Word of God, you will see some of the qualities of the Bible that can be said of no other book.

"If you do not love, know, understand, practice, and obey the Word of God, you cannot be a victorious Christian.

"I want you to learn how to study your Bible - how to make it burst aflame in your hand. Knowledge is power. That's true in any realm, business, athletics, or  theology, for knowledge of truth transforms. We need to be molded, motivated,  and managed by the Word of God.

"We must know the Word to have spiritual power. Yet for many the Bible remains a closed, mysterious book. They just don't understand it. There is no cheap, lazy, or magical way to understand the Bible, but it's not impossible. In fact, it's joyful and thrilling.

"Psalm  119, the longest psalm in the Bible, is entirely focused on the Word of God.  For your Bible to truly come alive, you must appreciate the qualities that set  it apart from all other books."

169 Let my cry come before You, O LORD; Give me understanding according to Your word.
170 Let my supplication come before You; Deliver me according to Your word.
171 Let my lips utter praise, For You teach me Your statutes.
172 Let my tongue sing of Your word, For all Your commandments are righteousness.
173 Let Your hand be ready to help me, For I have chosen Your precepts.
174 I long for Your salvation, O LORD, And Your law is my delight.
175 Let my soul live that it may praise You, And let Your ordinances help me.
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek Your servant, For I do not forget Your commandments.
Psalm 119:169-176

The Bible is a Timeless Book

Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.
Psalm 119:89

Of old I have known from Your testimonies That You have founded them forever. Resh.
Psalm 119:152

The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting. Shin.
Psalm 119:160

BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURES FOREVER." And this is the word which was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:25

The Bible is a Truthful Book

Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, And Your law is truth.
Psalm 119:142

You are near, O LORD, And all Your commandments are truth.
Psalm 119:151

The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting. Shin.
Psalm 119:160

Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he  went out again to the Jews and said to them, " I find no guilt in Him.
John 18:38

"Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
John 17:17

All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
2 Timothy 3:16

But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'"
Matthew 4:4

Stay with us!  In Part Two, we will "discover how the Word of God pulsates with Life!"

Queen of Sheba Visits King Solomon, Julius Schnorr, 1872

"The Bible doesn’t deny strong sexual desires before marriage and in marriage. It acknowledges them, warns of their potential danger, but also rejoices in their right expression. And that’s what we have here. ...intimacy within marriage is received with thanksgiving, as all of God’s created gifts should be (see 1 Timothy 4:4). Here right love is rightly exalted. Here desire and the fulfillment of that desire are celebrated."

1 "Oh  that you were like a brother to me Who nursed at my mother's breasts. If I found you outdoors, I would kiss you; No one would despise me, either.
2 "I would lead you and bring you Into the house of my mother, who used to instruct me; I would give you spiced wine to drink from the juice of my pomegranates.
3 "Let his left hand be under my head And his right hand embrace me."
4 "I want you to swear, O daughters of Jerusalem, Do not arouse or awaken my love Until she pleases."
5 "Who is this coming up from the wilderness Leaning on her beloved?" "Beneath the apple tree I awakened you; There your mother was in labor with you, There she was in labor and gave you birth.
6 "Put me like a seal over your heart, Like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, Jealousy is as severe as Sheol; Its flashes are flashes of fire, The very flame of the LORD.
7 "Many waters cannot  quench love, Nor will rivers overflow it; If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, It would be utterly despised."
8 "We have a little sister, And she has no breasts; What shall we do for our sister On the day when she is spoken for?
9 "If she is a wall, We will build on her a battlement of silver; But if she is a door, We will barricade her with planks of cedar."
10 "I was a wall, and my breasts were like towers; Then I became in his eyes as one who finds peace.
11 "Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon; He entrusted the vineyard to caretakers. Each one was to bring a thousand shekels of silver for its fruit.
12 "My very own vineyard is at my disposal; The thousand shekels are for you, Solomon, And two hundred are for those who take care of its fruit."
13 "O you who sit in the gardens, My companions are listening for your voice - Let me hear it!"
14 "Hurry, my beloved, And be like a gazelle or a young stag On the mountains of spices."

"Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

1 "How beautiful are your feet in sandals, O prince's daughter! The curves of your hips are like jewels, The work of the hands of an artist.
2 "Your navel is like a round goblet Which never lacks mixed wine; Your belly is like a heap of wheat Fenced about with lilies.
3 "Your two breasts are like two fawns, Twins of a gazelle.
4 "Your neck is like a tower of ivory, Your eyes like the pools in Heshbon By the gate of Bath-rabbim; Your nose is like the tower of Lebanon, Which faces toward Damascus.
5 "Your head crowns you like Carmel, And the flowing locks of your head are like purple threads; The king is captivated by your tresses.
6 "How beautiful and how delightful you are, My love, with all your charms!
7 "Your stature is like a palm tree, And your breasts are like its clusters.
8 "I said, 'I will climb the palm tree, I will take hold of its fruit stalks.' Oh, may your breasts be like clusters of the vine, And the fragrance of your breath like apples,
9 And your mouth like the best wine!" "It  goes down smoothly for my beloved, Flowing gently through the lips of those who fall asleep.

10 "I am my beloved's, And his desire is for me.
11 "Come, my beloved, let us go out into the country, Let us spend the night in the villages.
12 "Let us rise early and go to the vineyards; Let us see whether the vine has budded And its blossoms have opened, And whether the pomegranates have bloomed. There I will give you my love.
13 "The mandrakes have given forth fragrance; And over our doors are all choice fruits, Both new and old, Which I have saved up for you, my beloved.

"Our final application is an application to all Christians, and it has to do with our desire for Christ: Just as your desire for intimacy with your spouse is a reliable indicator of your marital health, so too your desire for intimacy with Christ is a reliable indicator of your spiritual health.

"Here I’m not making a connection with Christ by means of allegory—that when the bride sings of kissing, it is the Church singing of its spiritual union with the King of kings or whatever. I’m merely making a thematic connection, which is done throughout Scripture when the topic of marriage is addressed. In Ephesians 5, for example, when Paul is talking about husbands and wives, he naturally moves from that theme to the theme of the relationship of Christ and the Church (v. 32). And he doesn’t even explain the shift. He just shifts, assuming his readers are saturated enough with the Bible to grasp the shift. The same happens in Hebrews 1:8, 9, where the author quotes Psalm 45:6, 7 a wedding poem—drawing reference to Jesus as the divine representation of the Davidic king. So, within the canon of Scripture, one should not think of marriage without thinking of Christ, and this is because marriage was always intended to point to him."

1 "Where has your beloved gone, O most beautiful among women? Where has your beloved turned, That we may seek him with you?"
2 "My beloved has gone down to his garden, To the beds of balsam, To pasture his flock in the gardens And gather lilies.
3 "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine, He who pastures his flock among the lilies."
4 "You are as beautiful as Tirzah, my darling, As lovely as Jerusalem, As awesome as an army with banners.
5 "Turn your eyes away from me, For they have confused me; Your hair is like a flock of goats That have descended from Gilead.
6 "Your teeth are like a flock of ewes Which have come up from their washing, All of which bear twins, And not one among them has lost her young.
7 "Your temples are like a slice of a pomegranate Behind  your veil.
8 "There are sixty queens and eighty concubines, And maidens without number;
9 But my dove, my perfect one, is unique: She is her mother's only daughter; She is the pure child of the one who bore her. The maidens saw her and called her blessed, The queens and the concubines also, and they praised her, saying,
10 'Who is this that grows like the dawn, As beautiful as the full moon, As pure as the sun, As awesome as an army with banners?'
11 "I went down to the orchard of nut trees To see the blossoms of the valley, To see whether the vine had budded Or the pomegranates had bloomed.
12 "Before I was aware, my soul set me Over the chariots of my noble people."
13 "Come back, come back, O Shulammite; Come back, come back, that we may gaze at you!" "Why should you gaze at the Shulammite, As at the dance of  the two companies?

"The other night when my wife and I were lying in bed, I reached over and placed Emily’s hand in mine. I then shared with her how the first time I reached over and grabbed her hand (when we were dating) was the most wonderful physical sensation I have ever experienced. Honestly. And she said, “I know what you mean.” She then added, “You’re crushing my hand.” And I was, I was holding it so tightly.

"That short recollection (and the laugh about me crushing her hand) brought us closer together. We desired each other more. After that, to continue the playful mood, I asked her, “So, am I the best kisser you’ve ever known?” (She has never kissed anyone but me—that’s why I asked.) She responded, “You are the best kisser I’ve known . . . and the worst.” (Another good laugh . . . for her, and maybe for you.)

"...step two—remember (recall old times; ask your spouse today why he/she first loved you); and step three--understand (grasp that desire follows love). That’s what is in our text. She wants to be kissed (she desires him) because/“for”...  he loves her. Start loving each other."

1 "I have come into my garden, my sister, my bride; I have gathered my myrrh along with my balsam. I have eaten my honeycomb and my honey; I have drunk my wine cand my milk. Eat, friends; Drink and imbibe deeply, O lovers."
2 "
I was asleep but my heart was awake. A voice! My beloved was knocking: 'Open to me, my sister, my darling, My dove, my perfect one! For my head is drenched with dew, My locks with the damp of the night.'
3 "I have taken off my dress, How can I put it on again? I have washed my feet How can I dirty them again?
4 "My beloved extended his hand through the opening, And my
feelings were aroused for him.
5 "I arose to open to my beloved; And my hands dripped with myrrh, And my fingers with
liquid myrrh, On the handles of the bolt.
6 "I opened to my beloved, But my beloved had turned away and had gone! My
heart went out to him as he spoke. I searched for him but I did not find him; I called him but he did not answer me.
7 "The watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me, They struck me and wounded me; The guardsmen of the walls took away my shawl from me.
8 "I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, As to what you will tell him: For I am lovesick."
9 "
What kind of beloved is your beloved, O most beautiful among women? What kind of beloved is your beloved, That thus you adjure us?"
10 "
My beloved is dazzling and ruddy, Outstanding among ten thousand.
11 "His head is like gold, pure gold; His locks are like clusters of dates And black as a raven.
12 "His eyes are like doves Beside streams of water, Bathed in milk, And
reposed in their setting.
13 "His cheeks are like a bed of balsam, Banks of sweet-scented herbs; His lips are lilies Dripping with liquid myrrh.
14 "His hands are rods of gold Set with beryl; His abdomen is carved ivory Inlaid with
sapphires.
15 "His legs are pillars of alabaster Set on pedestals of pure gold; His appearance is like Lebanon Choice as the cedars.
16 "His
mouth is full of sweetness. And he is wholly desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem."
