Today, I refer to his powerful teaching about how to identify an apostate. It’s an important study and closely related to the current state of the Church in America. I suggest you study this teaching, in two parts, for a deeper understanding of Roger’s poignant message.
Portrait of an Apostate, Part One
Portrait of an Apostate, Part Two
The Book of Jude is small, but mighty. An Epistle, found in the New Testament, it packs a powerful punch and has been referred to as ‘a handbook for survival.’ Indeed, it helps Christians to identify, manage, and conquer our enemy in the world today, the apostate.
"12 These are the men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; cloud without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever." Jude 1:12-13
"A dangerous sunken rock… a deceptive waterless cloud… a dead, fruitless tree… a disturbed, raging sea… a doomed, wandering star…" According to Rogers, this is where the focus should be when you are trying to identify the apostate.
Rogers defines apostate as "not someone in a false cult or just an unbeliever. Those people may be lost, but they are not ‘apostates.’ Apostasy means ‘to fall away from.’ This is someone who has known the truth, then turns his back on and opposes the truth. He has received, then rejected, the truth. An apostate begins to ridicule the truth, then tries to replace the truth."
"Not only do you need to learn how to recognize an apostate, but you also need to know where the great battles are…those areas of truth under attack today."
What is the truth? Adrian outlines the six foundational areas of truth to which Christian doctrine adheres:
1) The virgin birth
2) The full deity of Christ
3) The blood atonement
4) The bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ
5) The second coming of Jesus Christ
6) The Authority of the Word of God
Rogers was an extraordinary man. I say this, because I appreciate the depth of his understanding of the Word of God. As if in testimony, he closes with this compassionate statement. We need to watch for the signs of apostatcy, yes, but also…
"Our hearts should be broken for apostates. How we should pray for them! The more I read the Word of God, the more I’m convinced it’s almost impossible for an apostate to be saved. Having known the truth, they refused, ridiculed, and blasphemed the truth, and many of them stand in the pulpits."
Sage advice, considering recent news of the Church and its fallen leaders.
