Daniel 3
American Standard Version
1Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. 2Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. 3Then the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4Then the herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, 5that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up; 6and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 7Therefore at that time, when all the peoples heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the peoples, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. 8Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and brought accusation against the Jews. 9They answered and said to Nebuchadnezzar the king, O king, live for ever. 10Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, shall fall down and worship the golden image; 11and whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, shall be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. 12There are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

13Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. Then they brought these men before the king. 14Nebuchadnezzar answered and said unto them, Is it of purpose, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, that ye serve not my god, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? 15Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, ye fall down and worship the image which I have made, well : but if ye worship not, ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that god that shall deliver you out of my hands?

16Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer thee in this matter. 17If it be'so , our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of thy hand, O king. 18But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.

19Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego: therefore he spake, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was wont to be heated. 20And he commanded certain mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21Then these men were bound in their hosen, their tunics, and their mantles, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. 22Therefore because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego. 23And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace.

24Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste: he spake and said unto his counsellors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. 25He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the aspect of the fourth is like a son of the gods. 26Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace: he spake and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, ye servants of the Most High God, come forth, and come hither. Then Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego came forth out of the midst of the fire. 27And the satraps, the deputies, and the governors, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, that the fire had no power upon their bodies, nor was the hair of their head singed, neither were their hosen changed, nor had the smell of fire passed on them.

28Nebuchadnezzar spake and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, who hath sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and have yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. 29Therefore I make a decree, that every people, nation, and language, which speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a dunghill; because there is no other god that is able to deliver after this sort. 30Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon.

How, Then, Does One Pray for America?

"Such being the impressions under which I have, in obedience to the public summons, repaired to the present station, it would be peculiarly improper to omit in this first official act my fervent supplications to that Almighty Being who rules over the universe, who presides in the councils of nations, and whose providential aids can supply every human defect, that His benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the people of the United States a Government instituted by themselves for these essential purposes, and may enable every instrument employed in its administration to execute with success the functions allotted to his charge. In tendering this homage to the Great Author of every public and private good, I assure myself that it expresses your sentiments not less than my own, nor those of my fellow-citizens at large less than either. No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency; and in the important revolution just accomplished in the system of their united government the tranquil deliberations and voluntary consent of so many distinct communities from which the event has resulted can not be compared with the means by which most governments have been established without some return of pious gratitude, along with an humble anticipation of the future blessings which the past seem to presage. These reflections, arising out of the present crisis, have forced themselves too strongly on my mind to be suppressed. You will join with me, I trust, in thinking that there are none under the influence of which the proceedings of a new and free government can more auspiciously commence...

Having thus imparted to you my sentiments as they have been awakened by the occasion which brings us together, I shall take my present leave; but not without resorting once more to the benign Parent of the Human Race in humble supplication that, since He has been pleased to favor the American people with opportunities for deliberating in perfect tranquillity, and dispositions for deciding with unparalleled unanimity on a form of government for the security of their union and the advancement of their happiness, so His divine blessing may be equally conspicuous in the enlarged views, the temperate consultations, and the wise measures on which the success of this Government must depend."
George Washington's First Inaugural Address in New York City

David and I have been reading The Harbinger, by Jonathan Cahn, and we are not surprised to learn of the supernatural judgment of America.  It is so plainly evident that we have become an apostate nation.  The state of the Church in America is in crisis, apostate, as well.  We wonder if there is any hope at all; we discuss prayer and wonder whether it is enough to turn our nation back to God?

Again I turn to Adrian Rogers, for he was ahead of his time when he wrote his lesson on how to pray for America.  There is excellent advice here.  He asks, "Is it too late for America?  No!  Absolutely Not!"  I am so relieved to hear him state this!  There are strict rules of order to follow, however.  Bringing America back to God will not be an easy task.  We must start with ourselves, move on to our families, our church, our cities, our states, and our nation.  Using scripture, upon which he bases this teaching, he delves deeply into the act of prayer for America: why we should do it, how we should do it, and to Whom our prayers should be offered.  This is a very rich study.  Speaking personally, it has provided much understanding and enlightenment.  It has been very helpful after reading The Harbinger, for as a person of action, I now better know what to do and how to do it!

He recommends fasting and recites much scripture in support of this.  He wishes us to repent and erase guilt and give glory to the Lord.  He notes how important it is to pray with confidence, without shame.  Rogers states, "We are in a cosmic battle, and our weapon is prayer."  He urges us to avoid extremism, to pray with concentration, sincere confession, for ourselves and for our nation.  We must confess and repent of our greed, neglect of the poor, racism, sexual immorality, the merciless killing of the unborn, and the godless humanism that has invaded our schools.

Adrian tells us that we can identify with the nation of America, just as David identified with the nation of Israel.  I paraphrase, "If you're a patriot, the most patriotic thing you can do is to give your heart to Jesus Christ, to get saved and to have your sin forgiven.  There is a deeper reason than patriotism for doing that.  There is a death to die, there is a judgment to face.  Soon and very soon, you will stand face to face with almighty God.  You do not want to rise in the resurrection and face a God in the judgment that you do not know, with sin unforgiven."  With tears in his voice, he closes this powerful lesson.  Dr. Rogers wants to see God's glory spread over this land.  He wants "something that cannot be explained by the pundits on television and the news anchors.  I want something that cannot be explained by technology, personality, propaganda or persuasion.  I want the Glory of God and the removal of guilt."

He orders us to believe in God.  He compels us to pray to remove guilt and restore the glory to God.  Pray like David, he states with emphasis!  Psalm 108 is a great example of just how to do this:

Psalm 108

1 My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my soul.
2 Awake, harp and lyre; I will awaken the dawn!
3 I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples, And I will sing praises to You among the nations.
4 For Your lovingkindness is great above the heavens, And Your truth reaches to the skies.
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, And Your glory above all the earth.
6 That Your beloved may be delivered, Save with Your right hand, and answer me!

7 God has spoken in His holiness:  “I will exult, I will portion out Shechem And measure out the valley of Succoth.
8 “Gilead is Mine, Manasseh is Mine; Ephraim also is the helmet of My head; Judah is My scepter.
9 “Moab is My washbowl; Over Edom I shall throw My shoe; Over Philistia I will shout aloud.”

10 Who will bring me into the besieged city?  Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Have not You Yourself, O God, rejected us? And will You not go forth with our armies, O God?
12 Oh give us help against the adversary, For deliverance by man is in vain.
13 Through God we will do valiantly, And it is He who shall tread down our adversaries.

To close, I would like to paraphrase Dr. Roger's prayer, found at the end of this lesson:

"Dear God,
I know that You love me.  I know that You would rather forgive me than judge me.  You are a God of mercy and a God of forgiveness.  Thank You for sending Your son, Jesus, to die for me on that cross.  Jesus, thank You for Your blood, for You shed it for me.  Right where I am, right now, I open my heart, and receive You into my life.  I give my life back to You to serve You in any way that You may call upon me.  Begin now to make me the person You want me to be.  Help me, Lord Jesus, to never be ashamed of You.  Give me the courage to make this public.
In Your name I pray, Amen."

Prayer of National Repentance

“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask Your forgiveness
and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, “Woe to
those who call evil good”, but that is exactly what we have done.
We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.

We confess that,

We have ridiculed the absolute truth of Your Word and called it Plural-ism;
We have worshipped other gods and called it multiculturalism;
We have endorsed perversion and called it alternative lifestyle;
We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery;
We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare;
We have killed our unborn and called it choice;
We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable;
We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem;
We have abused power and called it politics;
We have coveted our neighbor’s possessions and called it ambition;
We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression;
We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every
sin and set us free. Guide and bless these men and women who have been
sent; to direct us to the center of Your will and to openly ask these things in
the name of Your Son, the living Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

(Offered by the Rev. Joe Wright
at the new session of the Kansas Senate, January, 1996)
