Pray that Habiba Will Be Reunited with Family

Pray that Habiba Will Be Reunited with her Family
Prayer Alert, October 26th
Release International
Picture
Our partners, who are supporting the family, allege that Habiba was abducted from her school in Kankara by an aide from the Emir of Katsina’s household. She was then forcibly converted to Islam and married.

Some reports claim that Habiba’s new ‘husband’ is the Emir himself, Alhaji Abdulmummuni Kabir Usman: others say that she’s been married to the man who abducted her, Jamilu Lawal, and that the Emir was paid a £128 dowry for her.

When Habiba’s father, Isyaku, visited the Emir to beg for his daughter’s return, the palace insisted the girl consented to both conversion and marriage.

Katsina police have shown themselves powerless or unwilling to intervene. Release partners have raised the case with the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police in Abuja and with the Nigerian Government. Parliament has said two of its committees will investigate the case.
  • Pray that God will be close to Habiba and her family and that the Government would act swiftly and decisively to ensure her safe return.
  • Ask God to comfort Habiba and heal her and her family of any trauma they’ve suffered.
  • Pray that religious rights would be upheld even in states such as Katsina that are under Sharia (Islamic law).
  • Thank God for the courage of Release partners who work tirelessly to uphold religious rights, confronting even those in high office.

Pray for Five Families, Expelled from their Village Because of their Faith

Five Christian families in India were expelled from their village on Aug. 10 when they refused to help pay for a Hindu festival. The 10 adults and three children all belong to a church in a neighboring village. Recently, Hindu extremists and village leaders interrupted a worship meeting and began beating all of the Christians, including a pregnant woman, and two of the men suffered internal injuries. Each family was forced to pay an $85 fine before being evicted from their property and kicked out of the village.

Pray for Josephine, Receiving Treatment for Injuries Suffered in Attacks
iCommitToPray
Picture

A young Christian woman is receiving medical care for injuries suffered throughout her life because of her Christian faith. When Josephine was 5 years old, a group of Muslims confronted her family about their Christmas decorations and tried to burn their house down. Josephine sustained severe burns on her chest and stomach, but her family was too poor to get the treatment she needed. Later, as an adult, she was harassed and mistreated by her boss for being the only Christian at a beauty parlor where she worked. In one incident, her boss pushed her into a broom she was using, causing her to lose her right eye. VOM is assisting Josephine with medical care, and she has already had two surgeries. Please pray for her healing and that she will continue to be bold in her faith.

Pray for Naomi and Joseph, Whose Father Was Recently Killed

Perfecto Padilla, a church elder in the Philippines, was shot to death outside his home on Sept. 11 by two Muslim men. His daughter ran out to help him, but he died before a neighbor could get him to a hospital. Christians say that a mosque has been built in their once peaceful village and that Muslims are now trying to force Christians out of the region. Perfecto’s children, Naomi, 12, and Joseph, 10, are mourning the loss of their father and want to know why this happened to him. They have no contact with their mother. VOM is helping provide financial assistance for the children. Please pray for Naomi and Joseph.

Pray for Manjula and her Children, Kicked out of their Home
iCommitToPray
Picture

A new believer in India has been kicked out of her home, along with her children, because she converted from Hinduism to Christianity. Manjula, 37, had long worshiped at Hindu temples and shrines, but after learning about Jesus from a Christian woman, she began attending church with her mother and two teenage children. Her husband told her that she could attend church if she did not make her faith public. Nevertheless, she boldly shared her faith with others, and more than 10 other families became Christians through her witness. When Manjula’s husband found out, he beat her and demanded that she and the children leave the house. They are now living with Manjula’s mother in another village. Please pray for this family, and pray that the kids will be able to continue in school.

Prayer Alert for Accused in SudanĀ

Execution Fear for Accused in Sudan
Prayer Alert, October 14th, 2016
Release International
Picture
Three Sudanese Christians and a Czech believer will appear in court in Khartoum on Monday. If convicted, they could face execution.

Please pray God’s peace over our brothers, pastors Hassan Abduraheem and Kowa Shamaal, Abdulmonem Abdumawla and Petr Jašek.

Sudanese officials accuse the four men of funding rebel movements in areas such as Darfur and South Kordofan, and have charged them with at least seven crimes. Two of the charges are ‘waging war against the state’ and spying, crimes that carry a potential death sentence.

Three of the men appear to have been targeted for their involvement with a Darfuri student who was badly injured in a demonstration. The two pastors, Hassan and Kowa, are from the Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan – an area where the Government is continuing a military offensive against rebel targets.

Their case was raised in the European Parliament last week, through a resolution signed by several members.

Sudan continues to be a tough place to be a Christian. Six Evangelical Christians were arrested in Wad Medani, in east-central Sudan, on Sunday for refusing to hand over a church-run school to the Government. All six were later released on bail. Meanwhile, five churches in Khartoum, from a range of denominations, have been notified their buildings are to be demolished and the land ‘assigned for investment’.
  • Pray that God will fill our brothers, Hassan, Kowa, Abdulmonem and Petr, with His peace and his grace.
  • Pray for the judges assigned to their case: pray that they will uphold justice and not be swayed by any anti-Christian agenda, and that the accused will be released soon.
  • Pray that Christians across Sudan will stand firm in their faith and put their faith in God alone, as persecution intensifies.

Pray for 21 Chibok Girls, Released from Boko Haram
iCommitToPray
Picture

On Oct. 13, Boko Haram released 21 of the 276 girls they had kidnapped from a school in Chibok in April 2014. Many of the girls reportedly appear frail, and at least one of the young women has a baby. Boko Haram targeted the school because they believe Western education corrupts the values of Muslims and because the school is located in a mostly Christian area. The majority of the girls were forced to convert to Islam and marry their captors. Negotiations for the release of the other girls continue. Pray that the Lord will comfort these young women and bring them and their families healing.

Pray for Asia Bibi, Whose Final Appeal Was Delayed
iCommitToPray
Picture
Asia Bibi, a Christian woman who has been imprisoned for more than seven years on a blasphemy conviction, has seen yet another delay in her appeal to the Pakistan Supreme Court. The court was set to hear Asia Bibi’s final appeal in Islamabad, Pakistan, but one of the judges recused himself because he is involved in a related case. Authorities had deployed nearly 3,000 police and security forces around the city in preparation for potential rioting by those demanding her death. Asia Bibi’s husband and two daughters are eager for her release, and they themselves remain under threat of attack by Muslim militants. Please pray for justice in Asia Bibi’s legal case as well as for the protection of her and her family.

Pray for this Czech Worker and Three others on Trial in Sudan
iCommitToPray
Picture
Petr Jasek, a former hospital administrator from Czech Republic, is currently being tried in Khartoum, Sudan, on charges of “crimes against national security.” If convicted of the charges, Mr. Jasek, along with two Sudanese pastors and another Sudanese man being tried on the same charges, could face the death penalty.

Mr. Jasek has a 20-year background in the medical field, including 10 years as a hospital administrator. This experience and training uniquely qualified him to serve suffering people in places like Sudan. Mr. Jasek has assisted VOM on different occasions to provide care to persecuted Christians in Sudan and Nigeria, including medical care for Christians attacked by Boko Haram.
Please pray for Mr. Jasek, along with Rev. Hassan Abduraheem, Rev. Kuwa Shamal and for the other Sudanese man, as their trial continues. Pray for favor with court officials, for justice in their trial and that all four men will be freed and allowed to return to their families. Pray that God will continue to protect and sustain these men who have been unjustly imprisoned for more than nine months.

Pray also for the wives and children of these men, who are naturally concerned for their loved ones. Pray that God’s peace will reign in their hearts during this difficult time.

Please Pray for Persecuted Christians, Now Supporting other Believers
iCommitToPray
Picture

Christians in Ukraine who once faced persecution by their own government and the Communist Party are now reaching out to other persecuted believers. VOM’s sister organization in Ukraine publishes materials in the Russian language and receives many requests for newsletters and other materials that share the stories of Christians who are persecuted for their faith. One reader in Ukraine said the materials had helped her realize “there are also modern day heroes of the faith, like the ones I read about in books of martyrs.” She added that the material from VOM sources had helped her understand the importance of prayer for the persecuted church. Please pray for these formerly persecuted Christians who now want to help support other persecuted believers.

Iranian authorities arrested 21 students in May for their involvement with house churches. A VOM partner in Iran requests prayer for the protection and comfort of the students as well as their families and loved ones. The students are all part of a ministry that is seeking to transform Iran for Christ. This ministry trains and equips the students in courses such as missions work and the persecuted church. Please pray for these students and for their families.

Please Pray for Sonxi as she Trains Christian Teachers
iCommitToPray

A young Christian woman who was disowned by her parents because of her faith is visiting churches in Laos this month to train Sunday school teachers. After “Sonxi” became a Christian at age 14, her parents began to beat her, deny her food and lock her in her room to prevent her from attending church. When they saw that none of these punishments weakened her faith, they threatened to force her into a life of prostitution. Sonxi ran away from home and eventually was disowned by her parents. VOM helped her attend a sewing class so she could support herself and later helped her attend a Bible school. Please pray for Sonxi as she shares her faith and trains new Christian teachers.

A Pakistani Christian man was killed recently when four heavily armed suicide bombers attacked a small Christian colony in Peshawar. As Samuel Masih left for work early on the morning of Sept. 2, he was shot in the leg by one of the attackers. He tried to warn security guards of the attack but was killed before reaching them. Five others were wounded while defending the 25 to 30 Christian families who live in the colony. All four attackers were killed. Please pray for Samuel Masih’s wife and five children. Pray also for the remaining Christians, many of whom fear more attacks by Islamic extremists.

Please Pray for Carla, Banned from Church by her Parents
iCommitToPray
Picture
Carla, a young Christian girl whose parents are Zapatista rebels, has been forbidden from attending church. The Zapatistas have expelled all Christians from the village where Carla lives, but her Christian grandparents have taken her to church against her parents’ wishes ever since they became Christians. Children at the church would sometimes point and say, “You are a Zapatista!” But Carla insisted, “No! I am God’s child.” After recently discovering where Carla was going, her parents forbade her from attending church with her grandparents. Please pray that Carla will remain strong in her faith.
