Some people believe Christianity is self-service only, but we can’t just take in the gospel and not share it with others. God wants to empty us of ourselves so He can fill us with something new. Then we can give of what He has given us. This is accomplished through ministry, or as the Bible calls it, good works. A good work is always done to benefit someone else so that God publicly gets the glory. Matthew 5:16 says: “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Our good works give the world a glimpse of God. Hebrews 10:24 says that the church should “stimulate one another to love and good deeds.”

Consider, believer, how sure and unchanging is our acceptance, since it is in Him! Take care that you never doubt your acceptance in Jesus. You cannot be accepted without Christ; but when you have received His merit, you cannot be unaccepted. Despite all your doubts and fears and sins, Jehovah's gracious eye never looks upon you in anger; though He sees sin in you, in yourself, yet when He looks at you through Christ, He sees no sin. You are always accepted in Christ, are always blessed and dear to the Father's heart. Therefore lift up a song, and as you see the smoking incense of the Savior's merit coming up this evening before the sapphire throne, let the incense of your praise go up also.
I used to live my life always hoping for the next thing. Today was never good enough. I was always wanted the next promotion, or the next salary increase, or the next TV set, or the next new car.
Always…..the next. Never…..the present. Then I met Jesus. Please don’t switch off. I don’t mean to be corny. It was a profound thing for me. And I heard Him say this – I came that you might live life in all its fullness, in all its abundance. (John 10:10) That got me thinking. You can’t do that if you don’t enjoy the present. Here and now. This minute. This day. No matter what the world tries to throw at us. Do you know why they call the present ‘the present’? Because it’s a gift from God. Every breath we take. Every step. Every taste and smell and experience. They’re part of the rich fabric that He weaves for us. Abundant. Full. Life. And in the middle of it all – we can just pause and be still … and know that He is God. There are lots of hints in the biblical book that bears his name that Nehemiah was a person who lived with an ongoing awareness of the presence of the Lord, and who highly valued the importance of communion with God.
