Happy New Year from John Piper's Dear Old Dad

John Piper gives abiding and deep thankfulness for his father's wisdom.  Please read Things I Have Learned, by John Piper, at One Place.

The right road always leads to the right place; therefore, get on the right road and go as far as you can on it.

There is only one thing to do about anything; that is the right thing. Do right.

Happiness is not found by looking for it. You stumble over happiness on the road to duty.

The door to success swings on the hinges of opposition.

God in the right place in my life fixes every other relationship of life. (Matthew 6:33)

It is never right to get the right thing in the wrong way — like good grades, wealth, power, position. Don't sacrifice your principles.

It is a sin to do less than your best. It is wrong to do [merely] well.

It is wrong to be yoked to one who refuses the yoke of Christ.

The part of your character that is deficient is the part that needs attention.

Don't quit. Finish the job. God can't use a quitter.

Anything you do that hinders your progress for God is wrong.

Beware of any society in which you feel compelled to put a bushel over your testimony.

It isn't enough to be good. Be good for something. The essence of Christianity is not a passionless purity.

Positive living produces negative effect.

Learn to be sweetly firm.

A Better Way to Depend Upon Him

Please read A Better Way, by Steve Arterburn, at One Place.

"Now let me give you some encouragement. If you place your focus squarely upon Christ and you try to see things around you as He would, it will become second nature to look to Him and depend upon Him rather than yourself. And you won’t get lost when you walk through dark seasons of life. Jesus will be your unshakable strength. And your focused gaze upon Him will keep you from altering your direction due to momentary discomfort–and from drifting off into spiritual shipwreck!"

Psalm 119, Mem

O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, For they are ever mine. I have more insight than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the aged, Because I have observed Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I may keep Your word. I have not turned aside from Your ordinances, For You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste! Yes, sweeter than honey to my mouth! From Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.

Psalm 119:97-104

Would our Lord and Savior make it any more complicated than this?  Truly!

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

John 13:34-35

PictureThe Prophet Isaiah, from a Bible Card, 1904

Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven. Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the earth, and it stands. They stand this day according to Your ordinances, For all things are Your servants. If Your law had not been my delight, Then I would have perished in my affliction. I will never  forget Your precepts, For by them You have revived me. I am Yours, save me; For I have sought Your precepts. The wicked wait for me to destroy me; I shall diligently consider Your testimonies. I have seen a limit to all perfection; Your commandment is exceedingly broad.

Psalm 119:89-96

Let Us Sing For Joy!

PictureBoys in a Pasture, Winslow Homer, 1874
O come, let us sing for joy to the LORD, Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms. For the LORD is a great God And a great King above all gods, In whose hand are the depths of the earth, The peaks of the mountains are His also. The sea is His, for it was He who made it, And His hands formed the dry land. Come, let us worship and bow down, Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker. For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand.

Psalm 95:1-7

Psalm 119, Kaph

My soul languishes for Your salvation; I wait for Your word. My eyes fail with longing for Your word, While I say, "When will You comfort me?" Though I have become like a wineskin in the smoke, I do not forget Your statutes. How many are the days of Your servant? When will You execute judgment on those who persecute me? The arrogant have dug pits for me, Men who are not in accord with Your law. All Your commandments are faithful; They have persecuted me with a lie; help me! They almost destroyed me on earth, But as for me, I did not forsake Your precepts. Revive me according to Your lovingkindness, So that I may keep the testimony of Your mouth.

Psalm 119:81-88

Praise the LORD!

Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting. Who can speak of the mighty deeds of the LORD, Or can show forth all His praise? How blessed are those who keep justice, Who practice righteousness at all times! Remember me, O LORD, in Your favor toward Your people; Visit me with Your salvation, That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, That I may glory with Your inheritance.

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, From everlasting even to everlasting. And let all the people say, "Amen." Praise the LORD!

Psalm 106:1-2, 48
