The planets Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter, Earth and Venus align to form what looks like Jesus on the cross with the head, the hands spread out and the legs together in accurate positioning, rotation and on a galactic scale. Indeed, even Saturn's rings can be viewed as representing the 'halo' or 'crown of thorns.' Most noteworthy, is the date of the alignment, the day commonly viewed as that of Jesus' actual crucifixion, April 3, 33 AD. The riveting, real-life story behind the popular hymn “Amazing Grace” is currently being told on Broadway, with producer Carolyn Rossi Copeland aiming to entertain audiences, while informing them about the harrowing events that led to the penning of the beloved song.
What makes the musical debut of “Amazing Grace” so unique is the fact that it deals with faith — a theme that is rarely seen in theaters. Copeland recently told The Church Boys that audiences are in for a true story about how love, hope, forgiveness and redemption converged in the life of British abolitionist and “Amazing Grace” writer John Newton, who lived from 1725 until 1807. When asked whether there were any moments in which she felt as though it was “definitely God” at work as she and her team prepared for the show to hit Broadway, Copeland pointed to the summer opening of “Amazing Grace” as being perfectly — and divinely — timed. “We were waiting for a theater December, January, February, March, April — then we finally get the theater at the end of April and we’re in previews the week that this horror happens in our country,” she said, speaking of the tragic June shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. “And the president sings ‘Amazing Grace’ and all of the sudden we have requests to do national television...” Stand with Billy Graham
If you live in the typical American community—with average neighbors—here’s the reality: • 7 of your neighbors struggle with depression • 7 abuse or are addicted to drugs or alcohol • 8 are struggling with unemployment • 60 don’t profess to know Jesus Christ as their Savior The moment we glorify ourselves, since there is room for one glory only in the universe, we set ourselves up as rivals to the Most High. Shall an insect that's been around for only an hour glorify itself against the sun that warmed it into life? Shall the clay pot exalt itself above the man who fashioned it upon the wheel? Shall the dust of the desert strive with the whirlwind? Or the drops of the ocean struggle with the storm? Give to the Lord, all you righteous, give to the Lord glory and strength; give to Him the honor that is due His name.
It is, perhaps, one of the hardest struggles of the Christian life to learn this sentence- "Not to us, O LORD, not unto us, but to your name give glory." (Psalm 115:1) In his book Cooked: A Natural History of Transformation, well-known food author Michael Pollan observes a curious paradox regarding cooking within American culture: “The less cooking we were doing in our own lives, it seemed, the more that food and its vicarious preparation transfixed us.”1 In other words, the further away we get from our food—both in growing it and cooking it—the more of a central role it plays in our society. Pollan points to the massive popularity of TV shows devoted to food and celebrity chefs as proof of our fascination with food...
I study what the ancient Israelites ate and how they prepared it; but, like Pollan suggests, I am disconnected not only from the food that I eat, but also the food that I study. One possible remedy for this disconnection to ancient food is to conduct an archaeological experiment. This summer, student volunteers on the Tell Halif archaeological excavation in Israel suggested that we try to make our own tannur (i.e., oven) and bake bread in it. My colleague and fellow Tell Halif supervisor Tim Frank has made a tannur before, so under his guidance, we built one behind the Halif archaeological lab at Kibbutz Lahav.2 First, a brief description of what we were trying to build. There are a few different types of traditional ovens that are still used today in the Middle East. One of the most common oven types is the tannur. A modern tannur is a beehive-shaped clay oven, usually close to one meter high, and will typically have two openings: one at the bottom and one at the top. Ethnoarchaeological studies show that after a fire fueled by kindling and animal dung is built on the floor of the tannur, the ashes are raked out of the bottom opening, before using the top opening to slap the dough onto the interior walls or even the floor to bake. Platters and cooking pots could also be placed on top of the upper opening and used for baking or cooking, respectively. Although most archaeological reports refer to ovens as a tabun, they are more like the tannur type of oven. The term tannur is found in the Hebrew Bible fifteen times, seven of which refer to an oven used to bake bread (Exodus 8:3; Leviticus 2:4, 7:9; 11:35; 26:26; Hosea 7:4, 6–7)... The Bible describes a formidable city where Goliath, the giant defeated by David, lived. Now, archaeologists have unearthed the entrance to this city, believed to have been the home of the powerful Philistine empire before it was destroyed in the ninth century B.C.
A massive gate and a portion of a fortified wall were uncovered in Tell es-Safi, a Palestinian village in Israel, giving hints on the biggest metropolis in the region during biblical times. Professor Aren Maeir, an archaeologist from Bar-Ilan University in Israel who has been leading the excavation, believes these artefacts once served as the entrance to "the lower city of Gath," described in the Bible as Goliath's home. The same gate is referred to in the Hebrew Bible, particularly in the story detailing how David escaped from King Saul to Achish, the King of Gath... Living Waters: Intelligent Design in the Oceans of the Earth Dr. Paul Nelson Christian Research Institute On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast, Hank welcomes Dr. Paul Nelson, Fellow of the Discovery Institute to discuss Illustra Media’s latest film, Living Waters: Intelligent Design in the Oceans of the Earth. Hank and Dr. Nelson explore the change that has taken place in our culture from an open view of science, which is a gift from God, to scientism and the philosophy of naturalism, which says everything can be explained by purely material processes. One of the features of Living Waters is the amazing echolocation system of dolphins. A dolphin’s bio sonar is so precise that it can detect a BB at the bottom of a pool and distinguish the difference between a ping pong ball and a golf ball. Such precision cannot come from blind chance, but can only be the product of intelligent design.
